چکیده

Although the loss of biodiversity resulting from extinctions is receiving increasing attention, the accompanying decrease in access to genetic resources has not been widely discussed. The threat of extinction for many species, both known and as yet undiscovered, grows ever greater as whole ecosystems vanish, human populations proliferate, and human-mediated interference increases. Even though efforts to compile listings of threatened plants and animals are developing (1), current views of timing of recovery from anthropogenic extinctions suggest that many millions of years will be required for replenishment to present-day levels (2).

Isolation and Characterization of Microsatellite Markers from Endangered Species (Camelus bactrianus)

Iranian bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) is an endangered livestock breed with distribution in northwest of Iran. Microsatellites are a powerful marker for animal genetic and cell line identification and population genetic study. In this study, after producing more than 40 Camelus bactrianus fibroblast cell lines, microsatellites loci from the genome of Iranian Camelus bactrianus cell lines ...

Diet analysis by next-generation sequencing indicates the frequent consumption of introduced plants by the critically endangered red-headed wood pigeon (Columba janthina nitens) in oceanic island habitats

Oceanic island ecosystems are vulnerable to the introduction of alien species, and they provide a habitat for many endangered species. Knowing the diet of an endangered animal is important for appropriate nature restoration efforts on oceanic islands because introduced species may be a major component of the diets of some endangered species. DNA barcoding techniques together with next-generatio...

An Evolutionary and Phylogenetic Study of the BMP15 Gene

DNA sequence data contains a wealth of biologically useful information. Recent innovations in DNA sequencing technology have greatly increased our capacity to determine massive amounts of nucleotide sequences. These sequences can be used to specify the characteristics of different regions, interpret the evolutionary relationships between categorized groups, likelihood of performing multiple com...

Conservation in Practice Using Economic and Regulatory Incentives to Restore Endangered Species: Lessons Learned from Three New Programs

We studied three new incentive-based programs for restoring endangered species on private lands in the United States: safe harbor, Environmental Defense’s Landowner Conservation Assistance Program, and conservation banking. For each program, we gathered data on the number of participating landowners, the number of species targeted for assistance, and the cumulative acreage of enrolled land. Mea...

Complete Citation: Dearnaley, John and Le Brocque, Andrew F. (2006). Molecular identification of the primary root fungal endophytes of Dipodium hamiltonianum

We have identified the primary root fungal endophytes of Dipodium hamiltonianum F.M. Bailey, a species of orchid endangered in Victoria and uncommon in New South Wales and Queensland. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole colonised root portions from four orchid individuals and PCR amplified with ITS1F and ITS4 primers. Cloning and sequencing of the main amplicons produced from the PCR analysis ...
